What if I participate?

Below is a brief overview of the study. If you are eligible and agree to participate, here is what you can expect.

Study activities:

During the first meeting online:
  • You'll talk with one of our team members about the study and can ask any questions you may have.
  • If you decide to participate, the meeting will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes. During this time you will complete the following:
    • You’ll complete a 30-minute online survey about your opinions, health, and behaviors.
    • A researcher from UCSF will show you some health education materials, which will take about 20 minutes.
    • Then you’ll complete a second online survey about your reactions to the educational materials, which will take about 5 minutes.
    • You'll be asked to provide your contact information so that the UCSF study researchers can contact you for the follow-up surveys.
Over the next year:
  • Over the next year, you’ll be asked to participate in four surveys. A UCSF researcher will contact you directly to schedule and conduct the surveys over the phone, or you can complete them online.
  • These surveys will ask about your experiences with health care services, your health attitudes and behaviors, and your education and employment history.
  • The first surveys will be 3, 6, and 9 months after the first meeting, and will take about 10 minutes each to complete. The last survey will be 12 months after the first meeting, and will take about 20 minutes to complete.
  • You will also be asked to take a some tests as a part of the study, which we will discuss with you at the first online meeting. from the first meeting, and another one 12 months from the first meeting.  Each will take about 10 minutes to complete, and you can take it at home or at your campus health center.

How long will I be in the study?

  • Participation in the study will take a total of about 3 hours and 5 minutes over the next year.
  • During the first meeting, screening and consent will take about 10 minutes, and filling out the survey and contact information form will take about 45 minutes. Going through the educational materials will also take about 20 minutes. The second online survey after going through the materials will take about 5 minutes.
  • The surveys in 3, 6, and 9 months will take about 15 minutes each.
  • The last survey in 12 months will take about 25 minutes.
  • You will also be asked to take a home pregnancy test at 6 and 12 months after you enroll in the study. It will take about 10 minutes to complete each pregnancy test and to report the results.

Can I stop being in the study?

  • Yes, you can decide to stop at any time. Just tell the study researcher or staff person right away if you wish to stop being in the study.

Payment for participating:

In return for your time and effort, you will be paid up to $200 for taking part in this study. You will be paid with a gift card after each survey you complete.
